The ND Racing Commission is seeking a qualified individual for the part-time position
of Safety Steward/ Investigator. As the Safety Steward/ Investigator, you will conduct safety
inspections, monitor track activities, and administer examinations and testing.
The part-time Safety Steward/ Investigator is a temporary position with varying hours. Early spring and summer are a very busy time for this position as the position works onsite at the racetracks in Belcourt, ND and Fargo, ND. Some overnight travel is required to the racetracks in the summer months.
Salary range: $25 - $30 per hour, depending on experience
Responsibilities:
Conduct pre-meet racetrack safety inspections with State Vet and State Steward. Monitor safety equipment (Vest, Whips and Helmets).
Monitor Jockeys, Outriders, Gate Crews and Exercise Riders. Monitor daily habits and practices of backside track activities.
Administer licensing examinations and assist with licensed personnel with any license problems.
Job Description
Administer drug and alcohol testing.
Assist State or Association Stewards with formal hearings during live race meets, and fill-in for
Stewards as needed.
Conduct investigations to ensure compliance with all required law and administrative code, relating to the ND Racing Commission and ND pari-mutuel horse racing.
Perform random inspections of North Dakota-registered foals, mares, and stallions.
Make recommendations to ND Racing Commission Executive Director to ensure the integrity of racing and compliance with horse racing laws and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a horse racing industry program, criminal justice, business administration, or related field.
Work experience in pari-mutuel events, flat racing, investigations, regulatory or law enforcement experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Work experience with writing reports, Microsoft Office applications, and alcohol/drug testing
required.
