POSITION TITLE: Outrider

DEPARTMENT: Racing

TYPE OF POSITION: Seasonal
RACING SEASON DATES: May 13 – October 2 (84-day Mixed Breed Season / Thoroughbred & Quarter Horse)
JOB DUTIES: Opens tracks for training hours. Guides horses on track as needed. Catches loose horses. Wears proper safety equipment including safety helmet and flak jacket. Ensure that anyone on horseback is wearing the proper safety equipment while on the racetrack and in the stable area. Guides horses off track and locks gate at break and closing of track. Leads post parades for races. Makes sure post parade reaches gate at post time. Acts appropriately to oversee the safety of jockeys, exercise riders and horses. Promptly report jockey objections to the stewards after the finish of the race. Reports unsafe working conditions, takes safety precautions and reports injuries promptly to supervisor or manager. Participates in and fully completes all required safety training. Regular and reliable attendance. Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL CAPACITIES & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Outdoor environment. Must be able to ride horse for long periods of time. Ability to move about the facility. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Prior equine experience. Must provide own riding equipment such as saddle, bridle, etc. along with capable catch horses.
LICENSURE: Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission
SKILLS: Knowledge of equine care. Ability to communicate and interact verbally and in writing with people of diverse backgrounds.
