POSITION TITLE: Track & Backside Area Maintenance Manager

DEPARTMENT: Racing

TYPE OF POSITION: Full Time

Reports, manages and participates in the work that needs to be completed by the maintenance team for the race track, training track, and stable area to ensure safe and functional areas.  Manages and participates in the work of track equipment maintenance. 

JOB DUTIES: Responsible for the live racing track maintenance processes. Oversee all maintenance of the racing track surface on racing and training days. Plan the maintenance and conditioning of track racing surfaces so racing and training programs are held under the right conditions. Manages, coaches and participates in the work of track maintenance personnel in their various duties and assignments. Interviews, hires and trains maintenance personnel. Schedules employees, distributes and plans job assignments. Reviews time edit sheets to ensure correct payroll records. Evaluates employee performance and recommends appropriate action. Responsible for maintaining the highest levels of employee efficiency and quality standards within the department. Oversees paddock area to ensure safety and cleanliness for everyone. Serves as liaison between the horsemen and the Racing Dept. for track and barn area needs. Develop and maintain close working relations with all users of the racing track. Establishes and oversees preventative maintenance for track equipment. Coordinates scheduling between the Racing Dept. and the horsemen for hours of operation. Oversees the acquisition of supplies and equipment for maintenance operations. Completes walk through of barns and reports work orders for repairs. Assists in supplying needed loads of dirt to horsemen. Completes or oversees the completion of proper administrative paperwork. Directs snow removal in winter months. Oversees waste removal for barn area. Oversees the track maintenance budget process. Devise effective budgeting strategies to keep the racecourse in top shape while still performing all maintenance within budget. Maintains the cleanliness, safety, and sanitation of all track racing equipment in line with company, local, state, and federal procedures. Sets policies and procedures to keep track maintenance running smoothly. Communicates with other departments to ensure efficient operations. Adheres to state gaming commission regulations and company policies at all times. Keeps appropriate records of track operations. Ensures files/records are updated and accounted for. Ensures all occupational health and safety requirements are met and adhered to. Responsible for wearing a radio and company issued phone and responding when necessary. Provides excellent customer service to PMRC guests. Reports unsafe working conditions, takes safety precautions and reports injuries promptly to security. Participates in safety training and accident investigation including completion of all necessary and required forms. Reports any equipment or property that is not working properly or is damaged. Regular and reliable attendance. Performs other duties as assigned. Duties and responsibilites may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the departmental director or General Manager, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. 

PHYSICAL CAPACITIES & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Required to work in varied indoor and outdoor environments. Works around horses. Works with heavy track equipment. Ability to stand/walk for an eight-hour shift. Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to perform daily duties. Must be able to lift 75 pounds. May be on 24-hour call for emergencies. Must be able to work weekends and holidays when necessary. Possible exposure to fumes and chemicals. 

LICENSURE: Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 4 years' experience working for a racetrack maintenance team. Previous management experience preferred. Must have valid driver's license with Class B CDL Air Brakes, safe driving record and must meet company insurance requirements. Experience operating tractors, track harrows, commercial mowers, and associated racetrack equipment. 

EQUIPMENT USED: Vehicles/equipment with snow blades, end loaders, road graders, company vehicles, snow blowers, shovels, rakes, and power tools etc. Ability to operate tractors, end loaders, harrows, floats, water trucks and horse ambulance. 

SKILLS: Experience in total operation of track maintenance functions. Knowledge of track conditions. Knowledge of heavy equipment. Excellent customer service, supervisory and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds. Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Be a good problem solver and multi-tasker.

This position serves "at will" however, for purposes of benefit payout upon termination, two weeks working notice is the proper period.
