Chief State Veterinarian (State of Arizona)

The State of Arizona is looking for a Chief State Veterinarian.

This is a leadership position within the Arizona Department of Gaming Racing Division and provides  professional veterinary expertise at racetracks regarding regulatory medicine and assists in the supervision of the medication program and test barn activities.  The management test barn activities includes the collection and processing of blood and urine samples and all related record keeping, the direct oversight of Test Barn Staff and the maintenance of the Test Barn Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols. Serves as the professional advisor to the Commission, Department and Stewards on drugs and medications; provides advice, materials and testimony including representing the Division and Commission at meetings and hearings. 

Assists in investigations, recommends policies and procedures for rule changes concerning the Division to the Director.  Works with the Division as the liaison to the Division’s contracted testing laboratory and conducts an annual review of the services provided. Works with the Track Veterinarian to ensure the racing soundness of all animals. Keeps records on horses placed on the veterinarian’s list and reviews practicing veterinarian records for adherence to state rules and provides oversight and guidance regarding the ethical practices of practicing veterinarians.  Prepares and submits a monthly report to Director concerning veterinary and testing activities.  Works with the Division to compile annual report.
