Under the supervision of the Executive Director through the Director of Field Operations of the Illinois Racing Board (IRB); monitors and regulates Harness and Thoroughbred racing in accordance with Racing Board rules. The Racing Board shall designate one of the two state stewards as the Chief Steward. The Chief Steward is the presiding steward at all race tracks at which he serves under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Racing Board. All other Stewards shall report to the Chief Steward, all action taken by them. The responsibilities are: occupies the Steward's Stand to officiate all live races; monitors betting interests' odds and wagering pools; reviews and approves occupational licensee applications; regulates barn area to provide a safe and secure environment for licensees and equines; oversees entries; selects the prescribed number of horses to be sent to the Detention Barn for testing; determines track conditions and needs for special equipment; executes the "Stop Betting Command" at the start of each live race; confers with the Patrol Judge, drivers and jockeys during the course of an inquiry and makes the final determination of the official order of finish. Conducts daily administrative tasks. All duties enumerated are to be performed only during the course of a live race meet.
College degree preferred with an emphasis in English, Public Speaking and/or Political Science. Excellent writing and speaking skills a must. The duties of this position can be performed at any racetrack under the jurisdiction of the IRB and requires the ability to travel to and from any track as assigned. Requires accreditation from Racing Officials Accreditation program. Requires familiarity with the administrative rules and statute. Requires 5 plus years of supervisory or management experience. Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office Software. Requires ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and the ability to bend, reach above shoulder level, lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
