Fairmount Park - Association Steward
Summary:
The Association Steward oversees all live race meeting activities and enforces the rules of the Illinois Racing Board and Fairmount Park. Works in conjunction the State Stewards, and Racing Office. This position reports directly to the Director of Racing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
: • Confers with track management, the Illinois Racing Board, and the HBPA daily. • Monitors Racing Officials duties, such as inspecting entrants, starting and judging races to comply with IRB regulations • Observes Racing Officials, Horsemen, and track staff performing duties to ensure compliance with IRB rules and track policy • Approves or disapproves requests of trainers to change equipment on horses • Confers with veterinary personnel regarding horses unfit to race • Writes reports to comply with IRB rules, such as recording and reporting all complaints, actions taken and penalties imposed • Participates in all hearings regarding compliance with IRB, and track rules. • 4 Day work week (2 Race Days / 2 Entry Days). Ability to work required overtime • Regular punctual attendance required • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The equivalent of two years of full-time experience which involved working directly with the pari-mutuel horse racing industry as a Racing Official, such as a Placing Judge, Paddock Judge, Racing Secretary, Clerk of Scales, Steward, Assistant Steward, or other Racing Official that involved interpreting rules of horse racing and making judgments or the equivalent of five years of full-time experience in the pari-mutuel horse racing industry in a non-official capacity that still involved interpreting the rules of horse racing, such as Jockey, Trainer, Owner or closely related occupation.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Preferred applicants shall be accredited through the Racing Officials Accreditation Program as a Racing Official or Steward, meet the experience and continuing education requirements of the program, and be in good standing with all racing jurisdictions.
Additional Information:
• Must be able to obtain and maintain Illinois Racing Board License • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check that may include fingerprinting, driver's and credit check
Salary is negotiable depending on level of experience.
2026 Racing Season – April 14th to October 27th
