The Wyoming Gaming Commission is accepting applications for employment for a Race Day Veterinarian. The Commission has preference for someone that has had previous employment as a Racetrack Veterinarian and/or licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wyoming. The applicant shall have a comprehensive understanding of the laws of the State of Wyoming and the rules promulgated by the Wyoming Gaming Commission. Applicants will make decisions regarding the soundness of the equine athletes to participate in a live horse racing event. Be available to the Stewards and State Vet. The applicant must have good communication skills, both verbally and in written form, be computer literate, and possess strong people skills.
The job description includes “Racing Soundness Exams” required by Pari-Mutuel Rules, Chapter 8, Section 2(n). The veterinarian will inspect all horses entered to race for soundness and overall health.
Physical Expectations: 20-20 vision (corrected) and the ability to distinguish the health and soundness of the equine athlete. Requires extensive time in the barn area on race days, extensive walking is necessary. Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
Education: Must be a graduate veterinarian surgeon in good standing and licensed to practice under the laws of the State of Wyoming.
Skills: Knowledge of the racing industry as it pertains to equine health and safety. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds.
