Paddock Judge TB/QH Racing - Iowa

Position: Paddock Judge for Thoroughbred & Quarter Horse Racing

Job Description: Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Iowa is looking for a Racing Official to perform the duties of Paddock Judge during our 2023 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race meet. The 2023 racing season in Iowa begins on May 12, 2023 and continues through September 30, 2023 with 80 total days of racing on a Friday through Monday schedule. Detailed job duties include: Maintain a list of horses which shall not be entered in a race because of poor or inconsistent behavior in the paddock that endangers the health or safety of other participants in racing. Proper use of racing equipment. (blinkers, flipping halters, hood, cornell collar, cheek piece, etc.) Supervise the assembly of horses in the paddock. Making sure horses arrive to their stalls within the allotted time per IRGC rules. Making announcements to the barn area for “Get Ready” and “Bring Up” calls prior to and during live racing. Maintain good communication from the Paddock via radio, PA system or phone prior to and during live racing with barn area personnel, trainers, racing officials, IRGC Stewards and State Vets and track maintenance personnel. Maintain a written record of all equipment, inspect all equipment of each horse saddled, and report any change thereof to the stewards. Ensure that the saddling of all horses is orderly, open to public view, free from public interference, and that horses are mounted at the same time and leave the paddock for the post in proper sequence. Supervise paddock schooling of all horses. Takes entries in the Racing Office, help with drawing of entries, proofing overnight sheet, assist in registration of foal papers and racing silks. Hustle races. (contacting trainers about status of horses for available races offered on entry days) Proof program pages for any equipment discrepancies and work with Starter on equipment changes noted in the program, first – time starters or horses previously on lists for potential issues and being prepared ahead of time. Regular & reliable attendance. Open to continuing education training for certain aspects of horse racing in order to satisfy requirements within the horse racing industry via federal, state or local laws pertaining to horse racing. Performs other duties as assigned.
