DESCRIPTION:

Work Shift:  This is a part-time, seasonal position based at the Emerald Downs Race Track in Auburn, Washington.  Live racing season typically runs from mid April to late September.  

The working environment is an office location, one in the administration office in the stable area and the other in the upper level of the grandstand to monitor and review live racing. The work schedule is flexible based on the scheduled times and dates that live racing is conducted.  The hours of work will range from week day, evenings, and weekend days plus holidays, usually a maximum of 32 hours per week. As the agency responsible for regulating pari-mutuel horse racing in Washington State, the Washington Horse Racing Commission (WHRC) is committed to maintaining public's confidence in the integrity of the sport. You will be responsible to assist the board of stewards in a daily tasks. You must also cross train in the duties of clocker to be available to record official workouts of horses scheduled to compete. You should also be knowledgeable in other regulatory official duties to fill in when needed.
 
About the Commission
WHRC is comprised of three voting members (a chairperson and two commissioners) appointed by the Governor, and four non-voting ex-officio members (two members of the Senate and two members of the House of Representatives).  The commission appoints an Executive Secretary and staff to carry out its assigned duties and the day-to-day operation of the WHRC.  For more information about the agency, go to http://www.whrc.wa.gov.
 

 

DUTIES:

The Washington Horse Racing Commission is responsible for regulating pari-mutuel horse racing in the state of Washington.  The assistant steward provides support to the board of stewards and must also be knowledgeable in other racing official duties to substitute when needed.
 
Some of what you will be doing include:

  • Working with the board of stewards by assisting in recording daily minutes, prepare conference notices and official rulings.
  • Entering data into the software program to update licensees records and equine records.
  • Answering incoming telephone calls, contact various departments with changes in the daily racing program, (scratched horses, jockey overweights, horses scheduled for testing, and results of races).
  • Operating keyboard that displays final order of finish and notifies patrons of any inquires or objections.
  • Annual review of Title 260 WAC for needed amendments and updates.
  • Perform fill-in clocking duties such as timing and recording official workouts for horses scheduled to compete. Entering data into computer for submission to industry reporting publications.
  • Filling in at other regulatory official duties as needed (paddock judge, clerk of scales, photo finish operator, receiving barn, test barn, film analyst, and others).

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of the pari-mutuel horse racing industry
  • Knowledge of WAC 260 and the ability to enforce the regulations
  • Be able to perform in a fast-paced environment with potentially stressful situations
  • Good communication skills for interaction with the public and stakeholders

 
DESIRED:

  • Accreditation by the Racing Official Accreditation Program
  • Three (3) years of experience in the pari-mutuel industry
  • Three (3) years as a racing official as designated by WAC 260-24
