Work Schedule is subject to Hawthorne Race Course annual race dates.
Primary location is Hawthorne Race Course.
Under the supervision of the Executive Director through the Field Operations Manager of the Illinois Racing Board (IRB), monitors and regulates Harness racing in accordance with Racing Board rules. Occupies the Steward's Stand to monitor all live races; regulates barn area to provide a safe and secure environment for licensees and equines; oversees entries; selects the prescribed number of horses to be sent to the Detention Barn for testing; determines track conditions and needs for special equipment; sounds the "Stop Betting Signal" at the start of each race; confers with the Patrol Judge and drivers during the course of an inquiry and makes the final determination of the official order of finish. May be required to perform the duties of Identifier, Security Coordinator and Vet Technician as required. Conducts daily administrative tasks. All duties enumerated are to be performed only during the course of a live race meet.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
College degree preferred with an emphasis in racetrack management or equine/animal science.
Excellent writing and speaking skills a must. The duties of this position can be performed at any
racetrack under the jurisdiction of the IRB and requires the ability to travel to and from any track
as assigned. Prefer at least one year of harness official experience. Prefer accreditation from
Racing Officials Accreditation program. Requires familiarity with the administrative rules and
statute. Prefer two plus years of supervisory or management experience. Requires proficiency in
Microsoft Office Software.
