Title: Track Superintendent

Reports to: Jack Hodge, Vice President

General Description: Plans, directs, & coordinates operations necessary to maintain the racetrack surface and all company transportation and heavy equipment. Duties include formulating policies and procedures compliant with company objectives and standards and Washington Racing Commission regulations, management of daily operations, and planning the use of resources.

Responsibilities: Oversee activities directly related to maintaining the racing surface to industry standards. Review departmental financial reports to assess for areas of cost reduction and program improvement. Manage staff, preparing work schedules and assigning specific duties. Direct and coordinate organization’s financial and budget activities to fund departmental operations, maximize investments and increase efficiency. Establish and implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures, conferring with organization officials and staff members as necessary. Determine staffing requirements and interview, hire and train new employees or oversee those personnel processes. Plan and direct activities such as track access, coordinating with race office and horsemen. Locate, select and procure materials to create, remix or supplement racing surface, to the appropriate texture and composition to achieve the maximum safety, water retention and conservation of surface materials.

Knowledge: Safety standards established by OSHA/WISA in the maintenance industry. Chemical safety and usage Proper and safe use of heavy equipment and various tools. Composition of industry standards for race tracks surfaces and physical properties behind the design for interaction with incremental weather relative to its use . Relationship between track surface and equine performance and safety. Budget preparation and implementation techniques Communication skills with the ability to listen actively and respond to fellow employees and vendors in a timely, competent manner.

Skills: Time management techniques Welding and various methods of fabrication Operation of various heavy machinery Assess needs of track surface to maintain consistency in varying conditions. Understanding of all tasks performed by staff. Documentation, hiring, terminating and progressive guidance and disciplinary actions.
