Overview:

The Track Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance of both racing surfaces at Belterra Park, for purposes of racing and training.  He/she will maintain and supervise a staff that assists with the upkeep of the tracks, maintenance of the irrigation system, barns and support buildings on the backside.  He/she will work closely with management to ensure safe conditions for all racing and training activities.

Serve as expert with regard to all matters affecting the conditions, maintenance and up-keep of racing surfaces.

 

Direct and plan the maintenance and conditioning of racing surfaces so that all racing programs can be held under the most favorable circumstances possible.

 

Advise management on the condition of the turf track (agronomics).

 

Manage the staff of the track maintenance department.

 

Direct, schedule and organize work crews through team leaders to accomplish all assigned tasks.

 

Coordinate with Racing Secretary to ensure that the stable area policies are being adhered to.

 

Ensure that all safety rules, regulations and precautions are followed, with respect to track operations, by conducting a regular program of inspections and following a  preventative maintenance program.

 

Supervise and participate in the maintenance of lawns and grounds on the backside and around gaming facility using assigned equipment.

 

Maintain the viability of the irrigation system(s).

 

Maintain professional relationship with horsemen, jockeys, etc.  Participate in meetings with horsemen to discuss any concerns they may have regarding the conditions of the racing surface.

 

Evaluate, select and order, in conjunction with the Accounting/Finance Department, major pieces of equipment and any material for track maintenance and conditioning purposes. 

 

Evaluate and implement an annual fertilization and pesticide program specific to the needs and conditions of turf track.

 

Select, train, and motivate groundskeepers and track maintenance workers.

 

Work with team members to identify and resolve problems, as well as, implement discipline as appropriate.

 

Prepare and submit payroll and other reports as directed.

 

Promote a safe and effective working environment through the use of all assigned equipment, chemicals, fertilizer and pesticides.

 

Creates and manages the Racing Maintenance budget.

 

Carry out training programs as new methods and/or techniques are adopted.

 

Make regular reports (oral and written) as required.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

  • Minimum 10 years experience working on a racetrack maintenance crew plus a minimum of seven years of management experience.
  • Must have experience operating tractors, loaders, graders, water trucks, track harrows and conditioners, commercial mowers and associated equipment dealing with racetrack soil.
  • Must have experience operating commercial fertilizer spreaders and pesticide sprayers.  Must have the knowledge to properly calibrate this equipment for proper distribution of material.
  • Experience with commercial turf maintenance equipment in order to maintain proper cutting heights and quality of conditions.
  • Agronomic experience needed for proper identification of turf grass diseases and pests.
  • Must be able to acquire State of Ohio Pesticide License. And properly train and monitor staff when and during application of pesticides.
  • Working knowledge of turf irrigation system to maintain proper growth of turf track and soil moister levels. 
  • Must have knowledge of race track surfaces and soil composition.  Ability to take periodic samples of surfaces for testing and implement changes in cultural practices based on testing results.
  • Ability to maintain all Regulatory licenses within assigned state of employment (OSRC and OLC)
