Veterinarian at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack

Veterinarian Full Time

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, responsible for monitoring the health of equines entered into races, in accordance with New York State Gaming Commission, Company’s applicable Operational Standards and GuestPath Universal Service Standards.

  • Ensure all New York State Gaming Commission regulations and procedures are being followed
  • Responsible for reporting any illness and injuries, issues certificates of fitness
  • Examine all horses before they enter their first race (at the meet) to determine their soundness and fitness for racing. (The Racing Vet may prohibit any horse he or she considers "unfit" from racing until such time as the horse gains a good condition.)
  • Accompanies the horses  from the paddock through the parade to the starting gate,  reporting to the stewards any horse in questionable physical condition
  • Follows and observes (from the ambulance ) the racing horses, and examines any mounts which appear to be in physical distress after the race. (The Racing Vet has the authority to have a horse placed on the Vets List, and is expected to recommend to the stewards the placement of horses on the Stewards List.)
  • Administer emergency treatment to racing horses in the event of an accident or injury. This vet has the authority to humanely destroy - on the spot - any animal which is, in his or her opinion, injured beyond repair
  • Maintain all medical reports, and any other documentation required by racing regulations or track requirements
  • Monitors Test barn operations, trains and directs assistants to secure samples and ensure proper identification of samples
  • Directs the procedures used to control contagious and infectious illnesses to protect the health and safety of horses and jockeys
  • Administers and directs the Racing Commission’s participation in the drug testing quality assurance program to ensure drug free racing
  • Follows all policies and procedures of the company
  • Have appropriate skills to deal with guest complaints and help defuse difficult, and sometimes emotionally charged, situations to maintain the guest's goodwill and respect.
  • Treats each person, customer or associate as an individual and in a professional manner

Education and Experience:

  • Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in New York State
  • Must have working knowledge of drug testing methods: veterinary medicine as it pertains to horses
  • Racetrack and thoroughbred experience required
  • Ability to be licensed by New York State Gaming Commission

Computer Skills:

  • Intermediate computer skills including word-processing, spreadsheets, routine database  and e-mail

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to perform tasks independently
  • Ability to understand and follow OSHA guidelines
  • Ability to adhere to GuestPath’s Universal Service Standards

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to maneuver around horses
  • Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to perform duties
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to50  pounds
  • Visual acuity sufficient for knowing activity in surroundings

Environmental Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to outdoor weather conditions in all seasons, including variable temperatures and wet and/or humid conditions
  • Noise level may be moderate to high
  • Work around Thoroughbred Horses
