Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino Inc. in Altoona, Iowa is seeking an individual to join our seasonal staff as a Racing Office Clerk. A background in horse racing with previous experience working in the Racing Office and/or as a Racing Official is essential for this position.
This position will require the individual to do various duties such as help take entries in the mornings, “hustle” races, help conduct the “draw”, produce an “overnight”, verify weights/eligibility/medication/ownership during production of the racing program pages, record wins on registration papers, assist with Stewards requests, and shadow other Racing Officials during live racing in order to “fill-in” for another Official if the need arises. Opportunity to work in other racing related fields such as Simulcasting or Mutuels departments along with helping to greet/assist horsemen at special events is also a possibility during the racing season.
This individual must have strong communication skills, knowledge of the horse racing industry, demonstrated the ability to uphold the rules of racing and conducted themselves with the highest standards of integrity. High school diploma or equivalent with at least two years’ experience working in a Racing Office and/or as a Racing Official. Able to copier, fax machine, and computer. Good working knowledge of InCompass systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, and other racing software. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with persons of diverse backgrounds. Able to lift at least 35 lbs. and work both indoor and outdoor environments.
The 2016 racing season begins with a 67-day Thoroughbred meet from April 28th through August 13th, followed by a 26-day Quarter Horse meet from August 20th through October 15th.
