Apprentice Program
The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC), a self-financing regulatory agency responsible for the regulation of the horse racing industry in Ontario, has a dynamic opportunity for recent graduates of post secondary programs in law enforcement, business, veterinary technician, or related disciplines. This full-time apprentice position is an important component of succession planning at the ORC in our continued efforts to achieve excellence in officiating. The apprentice program is designed to provide a strong foundation in the officiating of horse racing to an entry level candidate.
The program offers comprehensive training, including the shadowing of racing officials and intensive instruction by current Judges and Stewards. The Apprentice will become part of a panel of two or three officiating at Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing and may participate in investigations and Judges’/ Stewards’ hearings as required.
Travel and irregular hours of work are required, including weekends, evenings and holidays. The salary is $55,000, plus expenses.
Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who have a post graduate degree or certificate in the disciplines noted, as well as a general appreciation or knowledge of horse racing. Completion of the Standardbred Canada accreditation examination for Judges with a passing mark of 75% or better would be an asset and/or will be required as part of the program.
Other Skills: Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities; ability to work effectively under pressure with initiative, integrity and sound judgment; experience in conflict resolution; business writing; computer skills; and a valid Ontario Driver’s License. French language skills would be an asset.
