RACETRACK SAFETY OFFICER
Primary responsibility: ensure racing and training activities are compliant with state and federal regulations, integrity standards, and safety standards.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor activity on the racetrack and in the barn area for safety and regulatory compliance
- Conduct safety inspections, emergency drills, barn inspections, license checks, and equine welfare inspections
- Prepare reports about equine injuries
- Monitor equine and human ambulance practices and protocols
- Assist regulatory veterinarians with follow-up on injured/list horses
- Review all equine traffic through the stable gate
- Assist IHRC Stewards with hearings
- Notify IHRC Stewards and/or Investigators of potential rules violations
- Assist IHRC Equine Medical Director with veterinary vehicle searches and out-of-competition testing
- Assist IHRC Investigators with mandatory hair testing
- Observe saddling activity in paddock for safety and regulatory compliance
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of five years’ experience as a licensed racing participant (jockey, trainer, racing official, steward/safety steward, investigator, etc.)
Ability to walk long distances, sometimes in inclement weather
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
ROAP flat racing steward accreditation is desirable, as this individual may serve as an alternate Steward if the need arises.
