Chief Horse Identifier - FLORIDA

Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida is seeking a Chief Horse Identifier

The Chief Horse Identifier is responsible for accurately verifying the identification of the horse population available for racing. The person in this role works with the Racing Officials and State Officials to verify all horses are identified accurately and according to Racing Board rules and industry standard practices.

 

Major Responsibility Areas:

  • Inspects each horse on race day and prior to entering the Paddock to assure it is the horse stated by trainer to be entering the race.
  • Directly verifies microchip and may compare tattooed registration numbers on lip if applicable.
  • Verifies physical appearance matches official records and photographs.
  • Notifies track officials when doubt exists as to horses’ identity.
  • Alerts stewards to any horse late to paddock or not having arrived as scheduled.
  • Uses computer database to log all records; assures accuracy of information.
  • Maintains updated information in InCompass/Track Manager.
  • Oversees any other horse ID staff; works in collaboration with receiving barn and stewards.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate professional relationships with horsemen, regulatory agencies, racing industry leaders and other racing officials.
  • Enhances the relationship between the horse trainers, jockeys, employees, and management by supporting a cooperative environment that is safe for all humans and animals.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a horse identifier, veterinarian, thoroughbred trainer or other position involving identification of horses.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct experience working in thoroughbred racing industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in making sound and valid decisions in high pressure situations.
  • Must be able to work effectively with peers, staff members, and regulatory agency personnel.
  • Average computer skills to include effective working knowledge of InCompass/Track manager
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
