Racing Stewards (Seasonal) Louisiana

Racing Stewards work in conjunction with the State Steward (Commission) and enforces all rules and regulations of the Louisiana Racing & Gaming Commission. Qualified candidates should have thorough knowledge of the racing industry as it pertains to regulations and enforcement and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Represents the best interests of the association/racing administration regarding racing related matters.
  • Makes decisions regarding possible rule infractions.
  • Presides at hearings as well drawing of entries. 
  • Issues rulings on all racing matters during the racing season.
  • Assists contacting owners, trainers, and jockeys that need to be licensed by first post on race days. 
  • Reports unsafe working conditions, takes safety precautions, and reports injuries promptly.
  • Reviews any objection made by a jockey or trainer and determines whether a change in order of finish is warranted.
  • Approves & accepts scratches of horses for the program and finalizes the naming of jockeys. 
  • Administers the written trainers test and approves apprentice jockeys certificates.
  • Participates in and fully completes all required safety training. 
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the Department Director, formally or informally, verbally or in writing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires acknowledgment, understanding, and adherence to the Mutual Respect Policy.
  • Must treat co-workers and others with respect, honesty, consideration, and cooperation.
  • Must consent to and successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Must be 21 years or older (required by Casino and/or State regulations).
  • Must be able to obtain a Louisiana Racing Commission License. (Company will provide application).
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) and Electronics training from technical school or related experience.
