Examining Veterinarian - NYRA

The Examining Veterinarian observes race horses in the morning on rounds and on the racetrack in the afternoon. Completes pre-race examinations for horses scheduled to race; Helps to maintain department files documenting examination history of horses running at NYRA.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Observe horses running on the racetrack in the afternoon. Attend injured horses if necessary.
  • In the event of injury, immediately make an assessment and stabilize the horse if possible;
  • Help load the horse in ambulance. Attend injured horse in the equine ambulance while transported back to barn;
  • Along with the other NYRA veterinarians, complete an examination of each horse scheduled to run in the day’s races. Recommend scratching a horse if unsound, injured, or ill;
  • Help to maintain department files documenting examination history of horses running at NYRA;
  • Stay informed and up to date regarding safety and welfare issues affecting horses in the industry, veterinary practices, etc.

Qualifications:

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree. Ability to become licensed by the New York State Gaming Commission.
  • At least 2 years of experience in Equine Practice or the equivalent e.g. internship.
  • Administrative skills; Good interpersonal skills; Highly ethical, honest and professional; Able to be firm on decisions.
  • Must be able to work a racing schedule and relocate to Saratoga Springs for 7 weeks in the summer (travel stipend provided).
